Watch: The Making Of The Mosaic Damascus Chef Knife

Infinite Portal No. 1 Mosaic Damascus Chef

. . .

"Infinite Portal No. 1" Mosaic Damascus Chef Knife is the beginning of my journey into the intricate world of Mosaic Damascus. This piece is the first of its kind, representing my deep dive into the art of fine pattern-welded steel. I plan to explore this craft for years to come, but this knife marks the very first step in that journey. It’s more than just a chef knife—it's an experiment in a new medium offering a glimpse of what lies ahead in my exploration of this ancient art.

Specifications:
10” Blade
2.5” Heel
15” Overall Length
The blade is heat-treated to a hardness of 61 HRC.

I've spent countless hours on this rare piece of artwork. Every free moment has been dedicated to its creation, and I’ll also be handcrafting a custom magnetic display and stand to showcase it in all its glory.

The "Infinite Portal No. 1" Mosaic Damascus Chef Knife embodies more than just its raw materials. Every element, from the blade to the handle, comes together to create something truly extraordinary.

The blade is expertly forged from 15N20 and 1084 high carbon steel through a process far more intricate than typical Damascus knives.
This exceptional steel combination is traditionally found in the finest Japanese swords and knives, and I reserve it exclusively for my most rare and custom Phillips Forged creations. It’s a material I rarely work with, making this piece truly one-of-a-kind.
What you see in the pattern on the blade is actually the exposed end grain of the steel itself created through multiple cycles of careful forging to maintain the desired pattern.

The rare heirloom Moroccan cedar (thuya burl) handle, known for its incredible beauty and rarity, enhances the knife with a tactile elegance that complements the blade’s striking patterns. Thuya burl, often called the "wood of the gods," adds a sense of timelessness to the piece, its roots as deep as the traditions that forged the steel.

The Perfect Pinch Grip bolster is crafted from precision-machined brass, designed in the signature Primeaux style to enhance durability, ergonomics, comfort, and safety.

The Art of Mosaic Damascus

. . .

To the untrained eye, it might appear as nothing more than beautiful patterns etched into steel, but Mosaic Damascus is much more than that.

In order to create Mosaic Damascus, one must master the art of pattern-welded steel—a method passed down through the ages, where individual layers of metal are folded, pressed, and manipulated under extreme heat to create intricate, otherworldly designs.

Mosaic Damascus is a technique that requires immense skill and patience.

It’s a process that can’t be rushed or taken lightly, and it took months of careful planning, forging, and refining to bring this blade to life.
Each line, each swirl in the steel, though seemingly random, is deliberate.
It requires special attention to craft this repeating, infinite portal patterning on the steel.
In all honesty, Mosaic Damascus is a hidden language that only those who understand the forge can read, a language that speaks of fire, pressure, and time.

The Infinite Portal No. 1 Mosaic Chef Knife will be available for sale on auction on my website very soon, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek and some more information first.

This is a blade with a higher purpose.

The auction of this Mosaic Damascus Chef Knife will help fund the beginning stages toward production of a published hardcover book—a true piece of art & history that chronicles my journey as a maker. The book will feature gorgeous photos, personal stories, and behind-the-scenes insights from Phillips Forged and Primeaux Kitchen Knives, offering an intimate glimpse into the world of knifemaking and the passion that drives me forward.

For years, I've been encouraged to write a book, and now, that dream is finally taking shape. Over the past six months, I’ve been outlining, cataloging, and drafting, and this auction marks the exciting first step toward bringing the book to life. Once complete, the book will be sent off for publication, and soon, it will be available to anyone who shares a passion for knives and the art of bladesmithing.

But that’s not all.
In addition to helping fund the production of my future book, 10% of the auction proceeds will be donated to the Society of Inclusive Blacksmiths, an organization dedicated to making blacksmithing accessible to underrepresented communities. By participating in this auction, you’re helping to ensure that this sacred, ancient craft continues to thrive and inspire future generations.

I’ve documented every step of the creation process in a high-quality video, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how the Infinite Portal No. 1 Mosaic Damascus Chef Knife was made. From the heat of the forge to the fine-tuning of the blade, this video showcases the skill, care, and craftsmanship that went into producing this one-of-a-kind piece. Check it out below.

Owning the Mosaic Damascus Chef Knife is more than just owning a rare and valuable tool—it is about becoming part of a living history.
