How Damax™ Knife Steel is Made: Beyond the Blade Documentary

I’m excited to finally share a special project I’ve been working on in partnership with Alleima — a short documentary called Beyond the Blade.

This film takes you on a personal journey into the making of Damax™, a stainless damascus steel developed for the next generation of knife makers. We shot it between my forge in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Sandviken, Sweden — where Alleima has spent years perfecting their steel production process.

In Beyond the Blade, you’ll see the full story unfold through my eyes and voice — from the woods where I work to the birthplace of this steel. I wanted to show more than just how a knife is made. I wanted to share what makes Damax™ exceptional: not just the performance or the way it looks, but the ethics, the people, and the process behind it.

Thanks to Alleima, I was given access to every part of their production — from the raw material yard to remelting and finishing. You’ll also hear directly from the engineers, metallurgists, and product specialists who helped bring this steel to life. The two key alloys behind Damax™ — Alleima® 7C27Mo2 and 19C27 — come together to form 135 layers of stainless damascus with beautiful contrast and outstanding durability.

Once I got my hands on a billet of Damax™, I brought it home and began crafting a chef’s knife in my workshop. Every step of the process — cutting, forging, heat treating, grinding, etching, assembling — is documented. The film closes in my kitchen, where the finished knife is used to cook a dish inspired by the journey to Sweden.

This film is a celebration of sustainable craftsmanship, metallurgical innovation, and the connection between maker, material, and purpose.
